5 Interesting Facts About The Gallatin River
Did you know the fishing scenes in "A River Runs Through It" take place on the Blackfoot River, but the cameras rolled somewhere else? Producers shot most of the 1992 film's fly fishing on the Gallatin River, that eventually leads you to Big Sky.
The river runs past the Big Sky turnoff, near Big Sky Town Center. You can experience this stellar natural attraction when you book directly with Ascend Properties, and you get Big Sky Montana luxury rentals with full kitchens, plus caretaking and concierge from a local team.
What Makes the Gallatin River Different From Other Montana Rivers?
The Gallatin River is smaller than the Madison or the Yellowstone rivers, but these five facts belong on any list of Montana interesting facts.
- It starts in Wyoming: The river rises at Gallatin Lake, in the northwest corner of Yellowstone National Park, and flows about 120 miles north through Montana to Three Forks.
- A Treasury secretary gave it its name: The Lewis and Clark Expedition reached the Missouri headwaters in July 1805. The captains named the three forks for President Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of State James Madison and Treasury Secretary Albert Gallatin.
- The Gallatin River helps start the Missouri River: The Gallatin meets the Jefferson and Madison at Missouri Headwaters State Park, a National Historic Landmark near Three Forks. Together they form the Missouri River, more than 2,300 miles long.
- A limestone butte has a film credit: Fans of the movie will recognize Storm Castle Peak from the movie “A River Runs Through It.” It’s the limestone butte above the canyon.
- The Mad Mile lives up to its name: The lower canyon holds House Rock rapid and the Mad Mile, which Montana Whitewater rates Class IV in June and July and Class III from August on.
How Do You Fish the Gallatin River?
You fish it on foot. Fishing from a boat is prohibited from the Yellowstone boundary down to the East Gallatin River confluence, so wading is how most anglers work this water.
Know Before You Cast
Here are some things to know about fishing in the Gallatin River.
- Fishing inside Yellowstone requires a park fishing permit, available at ranger stations.
- Outside the park, check the Forest Service guide and current state regulations.
- During summer heat waves, state restrictions can close parts of the Gallatin to afternoon fishing.
Where Can You See the Gallatin Without Leaving Big Sky?
Head to Ousel Falls, just outside Big Sky Town Center. The Ousel Falls trail is an easy 1.6-mile round trip that crosses the South Fork of the West Fork of the Gallatin on the way to the waterfall. Park at the trailhead off Ousel Falls Road, or walk the 2-mile gravel path from Town Center.
The falls take their name from a small gray bird, better known as the American dipper, often seen near the falls. The trail stays open year-round, but it can ice up in winter.
