As one of the more popular trails around Big Sky, you're likely to see other people hiking or trail-running at Ousel Falls. Not to worry though, as there's plenty of room for everyone to enjoy this short but scenic trek. Plus, Ousel Falls is a dog-friendly trail that makes for a great morning or afternoon walking route.

Starting from Big Sky Mountain Resort, you can reach the Ousel Falls trailhead by heading east on Lone Mountain Rd (MT-64) for 6 miles. Then, turn right onto Ousell Falls Rd for 2 miles where the trailhead will be on your left.

2) Moose Tracks Trail - Easy/Moderate

Moose Tracks is another out-and-back trail that's popular among locals and visitors to Big Sky. The full trail spans a distance of 6.1 miles and takes around 3.5 hours to complete. You'll start at the base of Big Sky Resort's Swift Current chairlift and ascend partway up Lone Mountain to reach some astonishings views overlooking the resort and surrounding landscape.

Although Moose Tracks can be a lengthy summer hike in Big Sky, it's still a popular trail for hikers of all experience levels. The trail is easy to follow and offers great views throughout, so you can cut the hike short without worrying about missing too much. Like Ousell Falls, this trail is dog-friendly so long as you keep your dog on a leash.

3) Albino Lake Trail - Easy/Moderate

The Albino Lake Trail is a quieter out-and-back hike that spans 5.7 miles and takes around 2 hours to complete. Unlike the other hikes on this list, which cover much ground under a thick forest canopy, this trail is largely out in the open along rolling alpine meadows.

Those wide open views provide some truly magnificent views for your eyes to feast upon. Clear days allow you to see the impressive Koch Peak and Taylor Hilgards as you meander through the meadow. Plus, the titular Albino Lake is gobsmacking to behold.

Albino Lake is a little further out of town than some of the other trails on this list. From Big Sky Resort, head east on Lone Mountain Rd (MT-64) for 8.7 miles before turning right onto US-191 S/Gallatin Rd. Continue for 14.2 miles and then turn right onto Taylor Fork Rd where you'll contine for 3.9 miles until you find the trailhead on your right.

4) Beehive Basin Trail No. 40 - Moderate

Widely regarded as the best summer hike in Big Sky, Beehive Basin offers up everything from tranquil forest stretches to wide open alpine peak and lake views. The out-and-back trail spans 6.9 miles and takes roughly 3.75 hours to complete.

Although this trail might be a challenge for younger kids, Beehive Basin Trail No. 40 is one of the more popular family friendly hikes around. The breathtaking views keep you moving all the way to the top of the trail where a gorgeous alpine lake awaits you. It's the perfect spot to stop and rest for a quick picnic before heading back into town. Some of the most daring hikers even wade out into the alpine lake waters for a brisk refresh.

To get to the Beehive Basin Trailhead from Big Sky Resort, turn left onto Lone Mountain Rd for 1.4 miles and then turn right onto Beehive Basin Rd. Drive for 1.1 miles and make a slight right onto Summit View Dr before continuing left onto Beehive Basin Rd for another half mile. The trailhead will then be on the right.

5) Golden Trout Lakes - Moderate/Hard

This gorgeous trail in the Custer Gallatin National Forest is a wonderful place to get lost in nature (metaphorically speaking). Golden Trout Lakes is an out-and-back trail that spans 4.5 miles and takes about 2.5 hours to complete.

As the name would suggest, this trail leads to a great fishing spot at it's titular lakes. Even if you're not an alpine angler, there's still plenty of fresh air and scenery to enjoy on this moderately challeging summer hike. Golden Trout Lakes is also a great hiking trail to take your dogs and even let them walk off-leash in some areas.

To get to Golden Trout Lakes trailhead from Big Sky Resort, head west on Lone Mountain Trail to Gallatin Rd for 9.3 miles. Then, turn left onto Gallatin Rd and drive for 5.3 miles until you reach Portal Creek Rd. Drive for 3.8 miles before making a slight left onto Fs 2686 and continuing another 3 miles until you reach the trailhead.

NOTE: The final stretch from Portal Creek Rd to the trailhead requires a 4WD vehicle with high clearance.

6) Lava Lake Trail - Moderate/Hard

The final summer hike you need to check out during your visit is the Lava Lake Trail (AKA Cascade Creek Trail). This beautiful out-and-back trail spans 6 miles and takes roughtly 3.5 hours to complete.

Although Lava Lake Trail is a bit long and features 1,620 ft of elevation gain, the rewarding views you get are well-worth the effort. The trail follows Cascade Creek through the forest near Gallatin Gateway and ends with a spectacular view of Lava Lake surrounded by 10,000-ft peaks. If the regular trail isn't enough for you, there's an unofficial extended path that's well-worn and takes you to the other side of the lake. Although it's hard to get lost along the banks of a lake, still take caution if you choose to walk this extended trail.

To reach the Lava Lake Trailhead from Big Sky Resort, head west on Lone Mountain Trail for 8.3 miles until you reach US-191 N/Gallatin Rd. Stay on US-191 N for 13.5 miles, and then make a sharp left onto Cascade Creek Rd where the trailhead will be on your right.

Maximize your good times vacationing in Big Sky by avoiding the effects of altitude sickness. Our high elevation may be taxing for some visitors, but following these proven best practices will keep you safe, healthy, and enjoying the magnificent scenery!

Stay Safe and Keep Your Vacation Fun by Avoiding Altitude Sickness

The elevation of Big Sky in town is 7,280 ft above sea level. Depending on where you're at on ski slopes or hiking trails, you can reach as high as 11,166 ft (top of Lone Mountain). At those high altitudes you need to be conscious of your body and know how to deal with altitude sickness (AKA Acute Mountain Sickness).

Fortunately, there are easy and simple precautions you can take to protect yourself at these higher elevations in Big Sky. Follow the high altitude best practices listed below and you should have no trouble avoiding the effects of altitude sickness on your Big Sky vacation .

Symptoms of Altitude Sickness

First, let's go over the symptoms of altitude sickness. Watch out for these warning signs when you're at high elevation to help keep yourself and others safe. Common symptoms include:

Nausea
Dizziness
Aches
Light-Headedness
Fatigue

If you or anyone you're traveling with starts to show any of these symptoms, then rest in a shaded area until the symptoms subside. Take a moment to catch your breath, drink some water, and have a small snack before getting up again. Once you do get going, proceed slowly and keep a close eye on the conditions of whomever is suffering from altitude sickness.

Failure to deal with altitude sickness immediately could result in a high altitude pulmonary edema, which is a life-threatening condition. However, so long as you're vigilant and follow the tips below, there should be no cause for concern exploring the gorgeous high altitude landscapes of Big Sky.

Go Slow & Take Time to Acclimate

It's all too common for those visiting places of high elevation to overexert themselves. This can happen by failing to take time acclimating to the altitude, recreating too intensely, or a combination of both.

Especially if you've never been at higher altitudes, you'll want to take your first day in Big Sky fairly easy so your body can get used to the elevation. The reduced oxygen levels and lower atmospheric pressure up here can drastically affect your performance and cognition if you fail to give yourself enough acclimation time. So, spend your first day leisurely exploring the town and resort, saving your big active days for later in the trip.

Keep in mind though that just taking a rest day doesn't mean you'll can perform at altitude with the same intensity as at lower elevations. It's important to go slow and stay mindful of your condition as your hiking, biking, or skiing. If you start feeling any shortness of breath or lightheadedness, then stop and take a break until those feelings subside. Remember that no summit or view is worth putting yourself in a life-threatening situation.

Drink More Water

Simply put, you need to be drinking a ton of water; approximately 1-1.5 liters more than at sea level . Conditions are dry and you're far more prone to quick dehydration at theses high altitudes. Men should drink a minimum of 4 liters of water per day, and women should drink a minimum of 3 liters of water per day. If you're out recreating, then you'll need to drink more water than those daily minimums.

In addition to the general practice of drinking more water each day, here are some extra hydration-based tips to help avoid acute mountain sickness:

Limit Your Alcohol Consumption - Alcohol has a more potent effect at high elevation and will dehydrate you quickly. Avoid hangovers that will hamper your day of activity by limiting alcohol consumption in the evening.
Add Electrolytes to Your Water - Electrolyte packets like Liquid IV or LMNT are great to add to your water bottles. Electrolytes will rehydrate you faster and help you recover from long days out on the mountain trails and ski slopes.
Drink Little Amounts Often - Rather than drinking large amounts of water infrequently throughout the day, take smaller sips every 15-20 minutes for more consistent hydration.

Eat Plenty of Nutritious Foods

Water isn't the only thing you'll need more of at high altitude in Big Sky. It's equally vital that you're consuming enough calories and getting enough nutrients throughout the day. Especially on more active days, make sure you get a hearty breakfast and pack plenty of snacks to keep you going during all your adventures.

Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and pasta are all excellent for keeping you well-nourished and stabilizing your blood sugar. While we love a pub burger or slice(s) of pizza, we'd recommend leaving those meals to after a big hike or day on the ski slopes. Those meals make for nice rewards at the end of a long, hard day.

BONUS: Wear Adequate Sun Protection

This tip is more for helping prevent sunburn and heatstroke than altitude sickness, but since none of those options are any fun we feel it's still worth sharing. The sun's UV rays are far more intense at Big Sky's high altitudes compared to at sea level, so you need to bring adequate sun protection in both the summer and winter.

During summer, sunscreen will be your best friend. Whether you're out hiking towering peaks or just wandering Big Sky resort, make sure you're applying sunscreen throughout the day. To further protect yourself you can wear sunglasses, a hat, and long-sleeve UPF clothes.

If you're visiting during winter, the biggest areas of concern will be your face and eyes. Since the snow reflects sunlight with great intensity, you're face can burn even faster during this season compared to summer. Apply sunscreen to the exposed areas on your face, and always wear sunglasses or ski goggles outside.

So long as you stick to those tips and stay mindful of your condition, you should have no problems enjoying your time at high elevation in Big Sky. 1) Ousel Falls Park Trail - Easy

The Ousel Falls Park Trail is located near Gallatin Gateway, 31.3 miles north of Big Sky. It is an out-and-back trail that covers a total distance of 1.7 miles and takes around 45 minutes to complete.

Ousel Falls is one of the more popular trails in the area due to its excellent condition, ease of access, and great condition. Although it can get busy, Ousel Falls Park Trail is fairly wide, so groups and solo hikers can pass each other with ease. Plus, the titular waterfall at the end of the trail is a must-see attraction near Big Sky.

The Ousel Falls Park Trail is ideal for walking your dog, going on a trail run, and families hiking with small children. That said, anyone can enjoy this trail during a fall trip to Big Sky.

2) Reflector Loop - Moderate

The Reflector Loop trail is located on the north side of Big Sky. It is a loop that covers a total distance of 4.1 miles and takes around 2 hours to complete.

Another popular trail, the Reflector Loop makes for a great morning or afternoon hike, especially during the fall. Aspen trees are scatted along section of the trail, lighting up beautifully as a contrast to the deep blue skies. Like Ousel Falls, you can also bring your dog on the Reflector Loop, but they must stay on a leash.

When hiking the Reflector Loop, it's most common to go in a clockwise direction. Keep an eye out for side routes branching from the main trail in case you want to extend the normal hiking distance.

3) Lava Lake (AKA Cascade Creek) - Moderate

The Lava Lake Trail , like Ousel Falls, is located near Gallatin Gateway. It is an out-and-back trail that covers a total distance of 4.1 miles and takes around 3.5 hours to complete.

Lava Lake trail is one of the most scenic trails you can around Big Sky. The route up to the lake features a few small waterfalls, and the foliage is wonderful to admire on the way up. Lava Lake itself is nestled at the base of many surrounding peaks, making for an awe-inspiring scene.

The official trail ends at the base of Lava Lake, but there is a well-worn path that goes along the lake's perimeter to it's upper side. It's definitely worth checking out this path, but don't go further once it starts getting more grown over passed the lake.

4) Beehive Basin - Moderate to Hard

The Beehive Basin trail is located right near Big Sky. It is an out-and-back trail that covers a total distance of 7.1 miles and takes just under 4 hours on average to complete.

Beehive Basin is probably the most popular Big Sky trail, and it's the perfect half-day hike for active families and friend groups. The moderately challenging uphill sections are more the worth the effort to see Beehive Basin's jaw-dropping mountain scenery. Plus, the incredible lake at the end of the trail is a wonderful spot to enjoy a lunch picnic.

In addition to that main lake, you can continue hiking up to find a couple more smaller lakes, provided conditions aren't too dry. Lastly, dogs are welcome on this trail and allowed off-leash in some sections.

5) Garnet Mountain Trail - Hard

The Garnet Mountain Trail is located near Gallatin Gateway in the Custer Gallatin National Forest. It is an out-and-back trail that covers a total distance of 7.7 miles and takes around 5 hours to complete.

With its greater length and elevation gain of 2,814', the Garnet Mountain Trail is certainly the most strenuous hike on this list. That said, most active groups and individuals should be able to hike it without issue. The trail's challenge is also rewarded with some of the most spectacular 360° views around Big Sky. You can observe the scenery from the large watchtower located at the end of the trail.

The BASE community center is Big Sky`s first community and recreation center. Along with info on facilities and programs, here`s everything you need to know about BASE.

On March 13th of 2022, Big Sky’s first ever community and recreation center, BASE, opened its doors. BASE, which stands for “Big Adventure Safe Environment,” is a state-of-the-art facility that will provide year-round recreational facilities, classes, programs, and events to everyone in Big Sky. Before you head down to the exciting new BASE Community Center, here’s everything you need to know.

BASE Design And Facilities

The teams that designed BASE, A&E Design and BRS Architecture , worked to craft a building that would serve as a “community living room” for Big Sky. Although it’s an indoor space, the BASE community center evokes the spirit of Big Sky. Its architectural palette of natural materials makes BASE patrons feel connected to nature, and the many floor-to-ceiling windows offer plenty of breathtaking Big Sky views.

However, a community center needs to have functional facilities in addition to an inviting design, and BASE accomplishes this criterion in spectacular fashion. At BASE, you’ll find a climbing and bouldering gym, a spacious workout facility, and a full gymnasium with basketball, pickleball and volleyball courts. In addition to those recreational facilities, there are meeting and classroom spaces, a childcare area, and a large gathering space to hang out with other community members.

BASE Classes And Programs

One of the main reasons why BASE was approved for construction back in 2018 was to provide a place for community members to recreate in group activities and classes year-round. Youth programs in particular were important to get started at Big Sky’s first community center. Throughout the year, children of all ages can participate in an assortment of activity classes and camps as well as fun art classes held at BASE.

Old kids (AKA adults) can also join in on the fun with their own selection of classes and programs. There are a multitude of fitness and wellness classes like group yoga to attend, and BASE will also serve as the hub for several athletic leagues throughout the year. Lastly, the community center will work in conjunction with the Arts Council of Big Sky to host art programs for adults too.

Although some classes may extend beyond normal operating hours, most programs and facilities will take place within the BASE Community Center hours:

Monday – Friday 6AM-8PM
Saturday & Sunday 9AM-6PM

Pass Information For BASE

The BASE community center was created with all Big Sky residents and visitors in mind. As such, there are a variety of pass options depending on whether you live in Big Sky full-time or part-time.
The first pass types are the ALL IN Uplands passes, which have options for couples, families, and individuals. These passes are valid for one year, provide access to all BASE facilities, and are intended for community members who live in Big Sky year-round. The pricing for each option is as follows:

Couples: Adult = $75/month | Senior = $70/month
Family: $121/month
Individual: Youth (3-22) = $25/month Adult (23-59) - $50/month Senior (60+) = $40/month

Two other pass types available at BASE are the Beehive Pass and the Mud Creek 10 Punch Pass. The Beehive Pass is for seasonal workers only (you will need proof of seasonal employment), and it is only valid from May through October. The Mud Creek 10 Punch Pass is intended for visitors or for those who only intend to come in for occasional use. Pricing for both pass types is as follows:

Beehive Pass: Youth (3-22) $198 | Adult (23-59) = $354 | Senior (60+) = $312
Mud Creek 10 Punch Pass: All Ages = $200

#6 - Big Sky Ziplining

With two stripes of ziplining experiences and warmer weather, spring is an excellent time to zoom among the Gallatin Mountain treetops.

The family-friendly Nature Zip begins with a 15-minute hike up Moose Tracks trail. The tour consists of four zip lines ranging from 275' to 490' in length and 30 to 50 feet in the air. The lines crisscross Moose Tracks Gully and finish toward the bottom of Moose Tracks. Be sure to wear or bring layers and wear close-toed shoes.
